Meet Chewy from Arkansas!!
UPDATE – 5-14-2024
Chewy’s issues are so deep that he is going into permanent foster at a sanctuary. There, he will live surrounded by canine friends.
UPDATE – 04-29-2024
While most puppy mill dogs are shy, some are paralyzed in fear. Chewy is that dog. Many things frighten him – men, noises, baths just to name a few. He hides under the bed 70% of the time, regressed in his house training and must go out in the fenced yard with a long lead in order to get him back inside. Anti anxiety meds made his fears even worse so he was taken off of them. The foster mom is working with our behavioral veterinarian and has seen some improvement but he also regresses.
The bottom line is that an applicant will only be considered with PROVEN experience with extremely frightened puppy mill dogs. This will be verified through the rescue the dog came from or the veterinarian office that worked with the applicant and dog.
Please do not apply for him if you’ve never had a dog as an adult and have little to no experience with shut down dogs. His home cannot have children as they will frighten him and he would do best in a female-only home. Another dog will help his insecurities.
With all of his fears, he is not aggressive and still welcomes love and attention. We are seeking a home with experience and patience. Preference will be given to local applicants so he can transition easier.
We all wish that dogs can become comfortable quickly in their new home. Chewy has been with his foster for 2 months and has made baby steps despite all the love and great care provided by the foster. We don’t want to see him regress and return to rescue because a family was not 100% prepared for what his needs are.
Thanks for your understanding. We can only imagine what he experienced before rescue.
Chewy came into rescue from our rescue partner in Tennessee who rescued nine mill breeder dogs from wire cages in Arkansas. He is one of Rae’s pups.
As typical for mill breeder dogs he is very shy, however, he is getting better in foster care. Having a well adjusted dog in his new home may be beneficial.
